Content Management - RSS & XML News Feeds

All Gilbane Report news is available in RSS 2.0 for syndication. This page explains what this means, terms of use, and how to access the RSS content.

What is RSS?

It is an XML application for simple syndication initially developed for news headlines. There is a short informative article on RSS by Mark Pilgrim, and O'Reilly book on RSS by Ben Hammersly. Also, see editor emeritus Tim Bray's thoughts on the future of RSS.

Why version 2.0?

Given the simplicity of our application and the broad interest in RSS news by simple news aggregator applications we decided 2.0 was the best choice for now. We are not using namespaces, but will if there is enough interest. There is some difference of opinion on the use of HTML in RSS feeds. We have decided not to include HTML as at least one RSS validator complains. We are interested in comments/suggestions on versions and features.

What is actually syndicated?

All of our news items, including the headline, date, and description. Some RSS syndicated news feeds only contain headlines, but since our descriptions are short we decided to include them. There is additional information, including company links and editorial comments that are not included in the RSS feed but are available when readers click on the headline link which brings them back to gilbane.com.

We also have a blog that provides RSS and Atom feeds.

Terms of use

You may retrieve our news and use it freely as long as:

  • you do not charge for it

  • you do not alter the content or the links back to our site

  • you let us know how you are using it (a quick email to customerservice@gilbane.com will do it.)

If you have any questions, send an email to info@gilbane.com.

How do I retrieve an RSS news feed from gilbane.com?

There are 2 options:

  1. You can retrieve the news from the last 7 days at: http://gilbane.com/news.pl/7/news.xml. Note that the "7" in the URL can be replaced with a different number to retrieve a different number of days.

  2. You can retrieve the news from any month by going to http://gilbane.com/news.html, clicking on a month in the index, replacing the ".html" at the end of the URL with ".xml" and hitting return. For example, if you selected the news for December 2002, you would see the URL "http://gilbane.com/content_management_news.pl
    /2002/12/content_management_news.html
    ". Replacing it with "http://gilbane.com/content_management_news.pl/2002
    /12/content_management_news.xml
" would generate an RSS files for December 2002. Note that any month can be retrieved by replacing the year/month ("2002/12" above) with the desired year/month.

Our news feeds are built dynamically so all feeds retrieved are always up-to-date.
